Magnus Carlsen World Champion of Chess

Magnus Carlsen won the 2013 World Chess Championship inChennai, India on Friday. The 10th and last game of the match ended in a draw, and so the final score is 6.5-3.5 in favour of the Norwegian.

Le roi est mort, vive le roi! Magnus Carlsen is the new World Champion of chess, and follows Viswanathan Anand's reign as undisputed world champion between 2007 and 2013. From the traditional lineage of chess players who won or defended the crown in a match, Carlsen is the 16th champion after Wilhelm Steinitz, Emanuel Lasker, José Capablanca, Alexander Alekhine, Max Euwe, Mikhail Botvinnik, Vassily Smyslov, Mikhail Tal, Tigran Petrosjan, Boris Spassky, Robert Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand. If we include FIDE World Champions Alexander Khalifman, Ruslam Ponomariov, Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Veselin Topalov, Carlsen is the 20th Champion of the game.

Garry Kasparov to Visit the Philippines, Campaigns for FIDE Presidency

Former world chess champion Gary Kasparov, one of the greatest chess players of all time, is here in Manila to campaign for FIDE (International Chess Federation) presidency.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines’ executive director Jayson Gonzales confirmed to InterAKTV that they’re scheduled to meet Kasparov, who won the world championship in 1985 by unseating compatriot Anatoly Karpov, by lunch time where they will have a press conference.

According to Gonzales, Kasparov’s visit to the country will be significant to Philippine chess in general.

“This will put the Philippines back in the international chess map,” Gonzales said in a telephone interview.

Kasparov is currently on his Asian swing trying to get votes from different chess federations. He is seeking FIDE presidency after learning that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov will run for a sixth term as head of the world’s governing chess body.

PBA okays Gilas Pilipinas’ 2014 Asiad stint

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas is carrying the country’s banner in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea next year, two or three weeks after its stint in the FIBA World Championship in Spain.
The PBA has approved participation of its players to the national team in the Asiad but not revising yet again its calendar to open a longer period of time Gilas can use to prepare for the world joust.
"Our fans are looking forward for the team to do well in Asia. But you can’t fool the fans. The fans now are exposed to global basketball.  They (the fans) know the strengths of our opponents out there," said Salud, realistic Gilas can’t contend for a medal in the world meet.

Purves yet to see Filipino good enough to play in NBA. Who comes closest?

AS much as he loves Philippine basketball, American coach and Memphis Grizzlies scout John Todd Purves is honest enough to admit he has not seen a Filipino player good enough to play in the NBA right now.

“If there is any Filipino player I can see playing at that level, I’d be the first to bring him there (NBA),” said Purves, currently the coaching consultant of Petron Blaze in the PBA.

“I’ve been observing all the games in the PBA. But there’s no one in particular I am trying to bring to the NBA right now,” added the amiable Petron official.

Philippines ensure maiden medal while punching ticket to Dubai

TEHRAN, Iran (3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship): Philippines weaved together an entertaining wave of offense, an enthralling web of defense and most importantly an enthusiastic fightback to break their semifinal jinx beating Chinese Taipei 77-72 in the Final Four clash of the 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship on Thursday that gives them an entry into the 2014 FIBA World U17 Championship to be played in Dubai (UAE) from June 26-July 6 next year.

Philippines, who lost to China and Korea in the semifinals of the first two editions of the FIBA Asia U16 Championship – and to Iran and Japan respectively in the bronze medal play offs – will line up against twice defending gold medalists China in the final on the morrow. Taipei, who were playing their semifinal game, take on Japan for the bronze medal.

The well worked and hard fought win along with giving Philippines their first medal in this competition, also avenged the 90-95 defeat they suffered at the hands of Taipei in a Group D Prelim Round game here – incidentally the only game Michael Ray Jarin’s team has dropped so far in the competition.

PHILIPPINES BEATS CHINESE-TAIPEI, EARNS SLOT IN FIBA WORLD U17 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Philippines under 16 squad duplicated the feat of the Men’s Gilas Pilipinas team by beating Chinese-Taipei 77-72 in the semi finals and earning the country a slot in the FIBA World U17 Championships in Dubai next year while booking a finals showdown with undefeated powerhouse China at the Azadi Sports Complex in Tehran, Iran.

Just like their seniors, the Filipino youngsters had to demonstrate nerves of steel and a remarkable fighting spirit to turn back the tough Chinese-Taipei team and avenge a first round 95-90 loss.

Ateneo high school hotshot Jolo Mendoza who buried four triples to finish with 28 big points left the best for last as he converted on a long three-pointer with 1:21 remaining in the game to push the Filipinos ahead for good.

Philippines crushes Iran en route to FIBA Asia U16 Championship semis

The Philippine squad got a measure of revenge on behalf of their Gilas Pilipinas "kuyas," dispatching Iran with ease, 79-52, in the 2013 FIBA Asia U16 Championship, Wednesday on their foes' homecourt, the Azadi Sport Complex in Tehran, Iran.

With the win, the Philippines will get a chance to enter the Finals at the expense of Chinese Taipei, the only team to have beaten them so far, back in the group stage, 95-90.

The two sides exchanged the lead back-and-forth early in the first, but Iran got stuck at 12 points, conceding an 11-2 run that saw the Philippines go up by eight, 22-14, at the end of the initial 10 minutes.

Coach Jarin hopes Manila triumph rubs off on the U16 team too

TEHRAN, Iran (3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship): Philippines, for all the effervescent performance they have shown, have faltered on both the occasions in the Final Four in the two FIBA Asia U16 Championship so far. At the 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship too, the SEABA champions are for sure one of the more enthusiastic teams who count their eggs on the speed and skillful display – rather than strategy.

In a manner of speaking that was the case with the entire Filipino basketball, till an inspired performance by the Chot Reyes-helmed RP National Team went all the way till the gold medal game at the 27th FIBA Asia Championship at Manila in August this year.

FIBA World Cup in the Philippines? MVP and co. studying possibility

With the Philippines gaining a stellar reputation among officials of FIBA after successfully hosting the Asian championship tournament earlier this month, local basketball officials are studying the possibility of putting up a bid to host the Basketball World Cup in 2019.

Officials of the world basketball body were impressed with the country’s staging of the FIBA Asia Championship from August 1 to 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena, from the venue to the accommodations to the technical aspects of the broadcast.

“They’re using the Philippines as a role model. Legend tayo roon sa mga FIBA officials. Ibang klase raw talaga how the event was hosted, the atmosphere inside the venue and how we were able to put up a world class coverage,” said Reyes.

The Gilas Pilipinas national basketball team had an unwritten motto – “No Pain, No Spain” which dramatized their readiness to make the sacrifices necessary to be able to fulfill the quest for a place in the FIBA World Cup in Spain, next September.

The sacrifices the players, coaching staff and even the utility guys made were recognized by Samahang Basketbol Ng Pilipinas president, business tycoon Manny Pangilinan whose passionate support for a number of sports, particularly basketball, is legendary.

Pangilinan referred  to “the devotion of these players to their families” citing Marc Pingris, reserve Beau Belga who gave it his all throughout the training stint, Larry Fonacier, Gary David, Gabe Norwood and others.

SBP praises volunteers as unsung heroes of successful FIBA Asia Championship hosting

Much has been said about the success of the just-concluded FIBA Asia Championship, both in terms of the country’s performance as host and the second place finish of Gilas Pilipinas to qualify for next year’s World Cup in Spain.

Not everybody knows though that had it not been for the some 250 volunteers who manned the groups that worked under the Local Organizing Committee, the Philippines would not have enjoyed the appreciation it is now receiving from all the national delegations representing 15 countries that took part in the 11-day concloave from August 1 to 11.

“Yes, marami nang naisulat, especially on our Gilas Pilipinas’ recapturing our deserved place in the World Championship, pero halos wala tungkol sa mga taong nagkaisang tumulong para maging matagumpay ang ating hosting,” Samahang Basketbol Ng Pilipinas executive director Sonny Barrios related on Friday in the SCOOP Sa Kamayan session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.

Olympics should be next target for Gilas Pilipinas, says Robert Jaworski

MANILA — For annexing the silver medal in the recent FIBA Asia Championship, the Philippines regained its place in the FIBA World Cup, ending years of futility in.

If Philippine basketball’s living legend Robert Jaworski will have his way, the next target would be to get back to the Olympic Games hoops tournament for the first time since the Munich Summer Games 31 years ago in 1972.

“Yes, I believe that in succeeding in our target to play anew in the World Cup, the next we should aspire for is for us to see action again in the Olympic Games,” Jaworski told the Philippine News Agency in a telephone interview upon arriving from a business trip to China the other day.

So advances in World Chess Cup

Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So crushed GM Alexander Ipatov of Turkey, 1.5-0.5, to advance to the second round of the 2013 World Chess Cup at the Scandic Hotel in Tromso, Norway.

The draw in the second match late Monday was all that the 19-year-old Filipino sensation needed to eliminate the 20-year-old Lviv, Ukraine born Ipatov, the reigning World Junior champion.

Reyes, PH team to embark on ‘biggest challenge’ yet in FIBA-Asia

MANILA, Philippines—There’s no denying the immense pressure riding heavily on the shoulders of the country’s men’s basketball team aiming to reclaim its glory in the Asian basketball scene.

And Chot Reyes, the national team coach, knows it well.

“The way to handle the pressure is to acknowledge that it’s there. We cannot deny it. We have to acknowledge it so that we can embrace it,” Reyes said.

“I don’t think there is any bigger pressure than what we put on ourselves and I don’t think anybody is going to pressure us as much as these teams on the table,” Reyes added, referring to fellow FIBA-Asia Championship contenders Kazakhstan, China, Iran and Jordan during a press conference Tuesday.

Dennis Orcollo wins US One-Pocket title

The Philippines' consensus Number One Pool player added yet another prestigious title to his glittering resume last Monday.

Dennis Orcollo claimed the US One Pocket championship with a 5-3 finals victory over American Corey Deuel. The final win capped a glorious unbeaten run in the Rio All-Suite Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada for the former world 8 Ball champ.

It was a sweet day also for another Filipino as Carlio Biado bagged third place. The La Union-born shooter from Quezon City had the distinction of eliminating former champ Scott “The Freezer” Frost deep in the Loser's Bracket.

Orcollo wins US$7,500 for his week's work. Biado takes home US$3,300 while another Pinoy, Francisco Bustamante, banked US$1,500
.
Two other Pinoys, Warren Kiamco and Amang Parica, also finished in the money, as did Filipino-born American Santos Sambajon.

Gilas schedules tune-up vs. dangerous Kazakhstan

In the run-up to the opening of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship, host team Gilas Pilipinas plays two more warm-up games, taking on a PBA select team Wednesday at the MOA Arena and the Kazakhstan squad Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Kazakhstan is an interesting assignment, considering this central Asian team is a potential matchup for Gilas Pilipinas in the quarterfinal round of the Asian world qualifier slated Aug. 1-11 at the MOA Arena and at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

While the home team is grouped with Jordan, Chinese Taipei and Saudi Arabia in Group B, Kazakhstan is bunched with Bahrain, India and Thailand in Group D.

The tall team from the former Russian republic is tipped to find its way to the knockout stage where it may cross paths with Team Philippines.

That’s the forecast since Gilas Pilipinas is likely to finish first or second in the A-B side while the Kazakhs can well make the do-or-die stage as third or fourth qualifier from the C-D bracket.

A tall team with decent outside gunners, Kazakhstan is the No. 1 team from Central Asia which once finished third in the Asian Games and fourth in FIBA Asia Championship.

ALSO READ: 'A great experience' - Reyes

The Philippines beat Kazakhstan for the bronze medal in the 1998 Bangkok Asiad but the Kazakhs got back at the Filipinos, also in the fight for bronze, in the next Asiad in Busan.

In 2007, the Kazakhs made it two in a row versus the Filipinos, beating the Phl team in their Jones Cup meeting in Taipei.

In the succeeding FIBA Asia tourney in Tokushima, Japan, the Philippines failed to make it past the preliminary round while Kazakhstan went all the way to the semifinals.

The Kazakhs, however, dropped to ninth in 2009 in Tianjin and didn’t compete in Wuhan in 2011.

After a four-year absence in Asian basketball, Kazakhstan looks to return with a bang, reinforced by Euro League veteran Jerry Jamar “Triple J” Johnson under Italian coach Matteo Boniciolli.

Equipped with tall frontcourt players and able wing guys, the Kazakhs filled a vacuum in their backcourt in naturalizing Johnson, the star guard of the Astana team in the Kazakh league.

Kazakhstan has become a lot dangerous with the addition of the Rider University Hall of Famer who has carved a niche in Euro basketball with worthy tours of duty in Turkey, France, Belgium, Lithuania and now Kazakhstan.

Johnson brought his act to Europe after missing the final cut with the LA Clippers for the 2006 NBA season.
