Magnus Carlsen World Champion of Chess

Magnus Carlsen won the 2013 World Chess Championship inChennai, India on Friday. The 10th and last game of the match ended in a draw, and so the final score is 6.5-3.5 in favour of the Norwegian.

Le roi est mort, vive le roi! Magnus Carlsen is the new World Champion of chess, and follows Viswanathan Anand's reign as undisputed world champion between 2007 and 2013. From the traditional lineage of chess players who won or defended the crown in a match, Carlsen is the 16th champion after Wilhelm Steinitz, Emanuel Lasker, José Capablanca, Alexander Alekhine, Max Euwe, Mikhail Botvinnik, Vassily Smyslov, Mikhail Tal, Tigran Petrosjan, Boris Spassky, Robert Fischer, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik and Viswanathan Anand. If we include FIDE World Champions Alexander Khalifman, Ruslam Ponomariov, Rustam Kasimdzhanov and Veselin Topalov, Carlsen is the 20th Champion of the game.

Garry Kasparov to Visit the Philippines, Campaigns for FIDE Presidency

Former world chess champion Gary Kasparov, one of the greatest chess players of all time, is here in Manila to campaign for FIDE (International Chess Federation) presidency.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines’ executive director Jayson Gonzales confirmed to InterAKTV that they’re scheduled to meet Kasparov, who won the world championship in 1985 by unseating compatriot Anatoly Karpov, by lunch time where they will have a press conference.

According to Gonzales, Kasparov’s visit to the country will be significant to Philippine chess in general.

“This will put the Philippines back in the international chess map,” Gonzales said in a telephone interview.

Kasparov is currently on his Asian swing trying to get votes from different chess federations. He is seeking FIDE presidency after learning that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov will run for a sixth term as head of the world’s governing chess body.

PBA okays Gilas Pilipinas’ 2014 Asiad stint

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas is carrying the country’s banner in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea next year, two or three weeks after its stint in the FIBA World Championship in Spain.
The PBA has approved participation of its players to the national team in the Asiad but not revising yet again its calendar to open a longer period of time Gilas can use to prepare for the world joust.
"Our fans are looking forward for the team to do well in Asia. But you can’t fool the fans. The fans now are exposed to global basketball.  They (the fans) know the strengths of our opponents out there," said Salud, realistic Gilas can’t contend for a medal in the world meet.
