‘Para sa bayan’: PBA to shorten Governors’ Cup to give way to SMART-Gilas, FIBA Asia

The PBA is making a great sacrifice for the national cause by shortening the season-ending Governors’ Cup tournament.

Commissioner Chito Salud said Thursday that the league’s Board of Governors has given him the go-signal to revise the schedule of the third conference to accomodate the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national team, which will represent the country in the FIBA Asia Championship in August.

“The board has agreed for the commissioner to study the possibility of abbreviating the third conference,” said Salud after a meeting with the board.

“Details will follow because I will study what format is best for the league.”
The PBA had original slated to end its season on July 28, FIBA Asia announced that it had scheduled the top regional cage competition from August 1 to 11.

However, Salud said it is already too late to adjust the schedule for the Commissioner’s Cup, with venues and out-of-town matches already booked. The PBA’s second conference tips off on February 8.
